The Ministry of Land, Water, and Resource Stewardship works with other agencies across the Natural Resource Ministries (NRM) to recover species at risk through both ecosystem and single-species based approaches. Several species are listed as Species at Risk under the federal Species at Risk Act and are subject to federally approved recovery strategies. The Province of British Columbia is developing a proactive, corporate, NRM-wide approach to the management of biodiversity, ecosystems, wildlife and species at risk. Leadership for Together for Wildlife and specific implementation plans (e.g., caribou, Northern Goshawk, Marbled Murrelet) resides within the Wildlife, Habitat and Species Recovery Branch within the Land Use Planning, Policy, and Ecosystems Division (LUPPE). LUPPE has the terrestrial stewardship mandate within LWRS, with regional operations, to ensure the province's ecosystems (e.g., forests, grasslands, alpine, etc.); wildlife and habitat, and aspects of freshwater ecosystems are managed in accordance with government's expressed priorities for balancing a complex array of public and corporate interest.

The Director, Species and Ecosystems is responsible for leading the development and implementation of recovery plans for species at risk, as well as the implementation of ecosystem-based approaches to biodiversity and wildlife stewardship in British Columbia. Working in collaboration with other agencies across the Natural Resource Ministry, the Director ensures that the recovery of species at risk is proactively managed at the provincial level and that recovery plans are integrated with other government programs and initiatives (e.g. Together for Wildlife, Timber Supply Review, Land Use Planning, Cumulative Effects). The Director also works across government and with Ministry executives to determine management priorities; implement inventory and research on ecosystems and habitat; develop wildlife, and habitat management programs and policy; and to lead the development and implementation of habitat and species conservation measures through legislation, regulation and policy. Through this work the Director is responsible for maintaining strong relationships and collaboration with Indigenous Nations communities, the federal government, tenure holders and stakeholders to support the delivery of Ministry objectives for species at risk recovery and ecosystem-based management.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

• University degree in Science, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Management, Public Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in Nature Resource Management.
• Progressively more responsible and recent (within the past 5 years) related experience within the natural resource environmental management field combined with extensive knowledge and understanding of a wide range of relevant fields of study including ecology, wildlife management, environmental management, wildlife health, zoology, botany, and geography.
• Experience in providing authoritative environmental policy options and advice, guidance and recommendations to senior officials in local, provincial and federal governments, national and international agencies and stakeholders.
• Experience developing and negotiating partnerships and agreements with Indigenous Nations, governments and communities.
• Experience developing and negotiating partnerships and agreements with other levels of government and/or stakeholder groups.
• Experience leading and/or facilitating multi-disciplinary teams of technical experts.
• Experience in managing a myriad of complex projects simultaneously.
• Experience establishing priorities, allocating, and managing financial and staff resources.

• Preference may be given to applicants with Master's or PhD degrees plus required experience.
