Job Description:
Key Accountabilities
Customer / Delivery
- Lead a distributed engineering organization delivering APIs and message-driven services, ensuring consistent execution across design, build, test, and deployment.
- Own the creation of solution options and guide the team toward a comprehensive end-to-end design, coordinating stakeholders across product, architecture, and platform functions.
- Promote a strong engineering mindset grounded in iterative learning (e.g., "build it, break it, fix it"), ensuring quality is designed-in and validated early.
- Ensure delivered solutions meet defined requirements for performance, availability, resiliency, security, and enterprise architecture alignment.
- Establish and evolve engineering best practices for API lifecycle management, event-driven integration, and test automation.
Engineering Excellence / Shareholder
- Execute on engineering strategy related to tooling adoption and automation for build/test/release/configuration pipelines.
- Drive governance and technical review rigor including solution design reviews, code reviews, operational readiness reviews, and deployment gating.
- Define engineering metrics and performance goals (e.g., quality, throughput, stability, reliability) and use them to drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure adherence to enterprise frameworks, policies, risk practices, and regulatory expectations in a large, regulated environment.
Operations (Large-Scale Production & Support)
- Ensure team accountability for operational readiness and production stability, including incident management practices, root-cause analysis, and preventative remediation.
- Partner with operations and platform teams to improve reliability and reduce operational toil through automation and improved observability.
- Establish clear ownership for service health, including production issue triage and escalation paths.
People Leadership (Manager of ~25)
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of ~25 engineers, creating a culture of accountability, learning, inclusion, and high performance.
- Provide career development, mentorship, and performance coaching; build succession and capability plans across the team.
- Build strong cross-functional relationships and act as a trusted partner to stakeholders across business and technology.
Must-Have Qualifications
- People management experience leading software engineering teams at scale (team leadership, coaching, performance management, and delivery accountability), ideally in a distributed or matrixed environment.
- Strong prior engineering background delivering distributed applications and service-based architectures, including:
- Java, NodeJS (or comparable modern backend runtime)
- Event streaming / messaging such as Kafka (or equivalent)
- API development patterns (RESTful APIs, service contracts, integration patterns)
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams through the full lifecycle: design code test deploy operate, including delivery governance and quality practices.
- Experience driving automation across CI/CD pipelines and engineering workflows (build/test/release/configuration).
- Strong collaboration skills across Architecture, Platform, Security, and Operations teams, with the ability to communicate technical decisions and tradeoffs clearly.
Nice to Have
- Experience building or using Kafka-related tooling for test automation, serialization, or integration validation (e.g., virtualized test clients / automated coverage improvements).
- Experience in regulated enterprise environments with strong risk & control practices, operational readiness standards, and governance expectations.
- Exposure to core banking platforms or large financial services ecosystems.
- Experience applying AI-enabled tooling and methodologies to accelerate delivery of distributed applications-e.g., API development, event-stream processing (Kafka), contract/schema evolution, test automation, CI/CD optimization, and developer productivity (code assistance, automated reviews, documentation generation).
- Familiarity with AI-driven engineering and reliability patterns in distributed systems, including intelligent automation (pipeline + release gating), testing acceleration (service virtualization, synthetic test data, regression selection), code/security quality analysis (static + dependency risk insights), and service reliability optimization (anomaly detection, incident triage assist, root-cause hypothesis generation across microservices and streams)
Experience / Education
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 7+ years of progressive engineering experience in distributed systems and backend development, with proven people leadership experience.
