Position Overview
Microserve is looking for a Virtual Chief Information Officer to provide strategic technology guidance to our core managed services clients. This role leads conversations about how technology roadmaps, investments, and priorities can support each client’s business goals, improve employee productivity, reduce technology friction, and manage risk. This role can be performed remotely from anywhere in Canada.
Bringing broad technology expertise and an understanding of each client’s operating environment and business priorities, this role translates client priorities into practical technology strategies, roadmaps, budgets, and recommendations. Working with client leaders and Microserve teams, the role helps clients make informed technology decisions and prioritize initiatives based on value, risk, readiness, and available budget.
Key Areas of Accountability:
Strategic Technology Leadership

Build a strong understanding of each assigned client’s business strategy, operating model, technology dependence, and growth priorities.

Develop and maintain a multi-year technology roadmap aligned with business objectives, operational requirements, financial capacity.

Translate business needs into clear technology priorities, recommendations, and decision points.

Facilitate strategic technology discussions with client executives and business leaders.
Technology Investment and Budget Planning

Develop and maintain annual and multi-year technology budgets covering lifecycle investments, strategic initiatives, security improvements, and anticipated projects.

Prepare business cases and decision requests that clearly communicate cost, business value, risk, dependencies, and expected outcomes.

Help clients prioritize investments based on business impact, urgency, risk reduction, and available budget.

Monitor roadmap and budget progress and recommend adjustments as client needs change.
Governance, Risk, and Compliance

Provide strategic guidance on technology governance, cybersecurity risk, resilience, privacy, and compliance requirements.

Identify material technology risks and ensure that appropriate recommendations are documented, prioritized, and communicated to client leadership.

Advise clients on the development and maintenance of appropriate IT policies, standards, controls, disaster recovery strategies, and continuity requirements.

Support alignment with relevant cybersecurity frameworks such as CIS Controls, ISO 27001, and NIST, based on each client’s needs and obligations.
Executive Client Engagement

Lead regular strategic technology reviews with client executives and key stakeholders.

Present roadmap progress, investment recommendations, key risks, emerging priorities, and decisions requiring executive sponsorship.

Communicate complex technology topics in clear business language appropriate to the audience.

Build trusted relationships with client leaders and act as a senior point of contact for strategic technology matters.
Solution and Project Governance

Provide business and strategic context during solution development, project scoping, and prioritization.

Confirm that proposed initiatives align with approved roadmaps, business requirements, budgets, security expectations, and intended outcomes.

Collaborate with project managers, architects, security specialists, and service delivery teams during planning and execution.

Participate in project outcome reviews and incorporate lessons learned into future roadmap planning.
Continuous Improvement and Innovation

Identify opportunities to improve employee productivity, service resilience, cybersecurity, technology adoption, and operational efficiency.

Monitor relevant technology and industry developments and assess their potential applicability to client environments.

Collaborate with Microserve teams to improve strategic service offerings, client planning practices, and executive reporting.

Proactively bring forward recommendations supported by practical business cases and implementation considerations.
Pre-Sales Client Engagement
-
Participate in qualified managed services opportunities with prospective clients to understand their technology priorities, demonstrate Microserve’s strategic technology approach, and begin building the trusted relationship that will continue after onboarding.

Contribute strategic and technical input to proposals for prospective managed services clients and for projects arising from ongoing technology roadmaps, and participate in presenting those proposals to clients.

Support effective transition of new clients from the sales process into onboarding and ongoing strategic technology planning.
Requirements:
-
10+ years of experience in IT management and strategic planning.
-
3+ years experience in creating and presenting long-term strategic technology roadmaps and budgets
-
2+ Years of experience with Microsoft 365 Modern Workplace technologies and Microsoft Azure
-
Demonstrated success in designing and implementing technology solutions and related systems, processes, and controls for a number of rapidly changing organizations

Experience and success in developing and presenting technology business cases, decision requests, and project charters
-
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization, including translating technically complex information to varying technical audiences.

Strong general business management and financial acumen

Knowledge of IT infrastructure systems and security operations and a demonstrated ability to resolve complex technology related issues.

Ability to manage and maintain private and confidential information with a high degree of professionalism.

Demonstrated capacity for forming and advancing relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

Strong resourcefulness, problem solving and project management skills.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Experienced innovative thinker with proven results in a fast-paced environment.

Intellectual curiosity and passion for technology to stay informed on industry trends.
Desirables:

Post-Secondary Certificate or Degree in an IT related field as well as up to date certifications, or equivalent field experience.

Previous IT Management or IT Leadership experience

Compensation: In accordance with the BC Pay Transparency Act the range for this role for BC residents is $100,000-$120,000 annually. Please note the exact salary is determined based on a combination of your relevant experience, skill, competencies, and internal pay equity.
